Background
From the Evening Post, Mar 4, 1999
A man has been sentenced in the High Court at Auckland to seven years in jail for firing a shot which ricocheted into a policeman's back. The sentence imposed on Wayne Douglas Adamson, 43, of Mt Wellington, will run concurrently with nine years he is already serving for kidnapping the officer, Detective Rob Nicol, and taking a car during the same incident at an Onehunga service station on May 25, 1997. Adamson was found guilty of causing the detective grievous bodily harm with intent. But he was acquitted of using the firearm against a police officer acting in the course of his duty, saying he did not know the plainclothes officer was a policeman.
