Background
Waikato Times story, Feb 27, 1999
A Rotorua man has appeared in court following the February 21 attack on a 19-year-old Swedish tourist. William Thomas Atkinson, 28, unemployed, who was charged with assault with intent to commit sexual violation was remanded in custody until March 18 by Judge Chris McGuire in Rotorua District Court. The tourist, Sophie Visser, jumped off a high cliff into a lake to escape a man who gave her a lift and then demanded sex. She then swam 500m to shore.
Waikato Times story, Dec 16, 1999
A Rotorua man described by police eight years ago as "a serial rapist in the making" has been sentenced to preventive detention on sex charges. In the High Court at Auckland , Justice Nicholson sentenced William Thomas Atkinson, 28, to preventive detention an indefinite prison term with no automatic entitlement to parole.
