Background
From Waikato Times story here
A convicted killer who served 13 years for the murder of a Taumarunui man is alleged to have breached his parole conditions.
Gregory Maunga Barrett, 35, appeared in the Hamilton District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody by Judge Eric Anderson.
He faces charges including breaching his parole conditions, possession of a knife in public, possession of cannabis leaf for supply and possession of cannabis oil for supply. A depositions hearing has been set down for May, but Barrett's lawyer Chris White said his client would not consent to more than an eight-day prison remand, so he would have to be brought back to court every eight days.
Barrett was released from prison on July 15, 2002, after serving 13 years for murdering Taumarunui service station proprietor Murray Shields on May 21, 1989. As part of his parole conditions Barrett was not allowed to travel to Taumarunui or associate with gangs. Police arrested the 35-year-old in Taumarunui last weekend. It is alleged he was in the company of Mongrel Mob members.
Barrett and co-accused Paul Wayne Tane stood trial for shooting Mr Shields, 41, and were sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty. The pair robbed Mr Shields' Manunui service station – 6km south of Taumarunui – taking $500 and then gunned him down in the back office. The father of three was well known around Taumarunui and knew Barrett and his family. Yesterday Mr Shields' mother, Olive, said the family were shocked Barrett had allegedly been back in town
