Background
From Brian Harmer's WYSIWYG News June 1995
In another case in Christchurch, a woman jogger running alone on a riverbank was attacked, beaten, assaulted and bundled into a man's car. She escaped once, but was caught, beaten again, and bundled into the boot (trunk) of his car. She managed to open the boot from the inside, and rolled onto the road from the moving vehicle. The woman went to a nearby house to summon help.
For about two weeks, there was no breakthrough. A number of women (and male supporters) walked the path where the attack took place as a symbolic "reclamation" of the path, and as an act of defiance to the evil-doer. On Thursday, the police announced that Devon Charles Bond, 28 has been arrested and charged with the offence. Bond is a former NZ wrestling representative at the world championships, and at the Commonwealth games.
From Court of appeal document;
R v Bond (CA 302/95, 18 November 1995) nine years was reduced on appeal to seven and a half years where the appellant had pleaded guilty to a charge of abducting a 37 year old woman with intent to have sexual intercourse with her, the circumstances involving prolonged terror, considerable violence, and forced abduction in the boot of the offender's car.
