For the armed robbery of a video shop and a ram raid on a tavern, Francis Allan Charles Borrell has gone to jail for nine years. The 27-year-old had a bad criminal record, including a 1993 conviction for armed robbery for which he had received a five-year jail term. Christchurch District Court Judge Colin Doherty described the unemployed man as "a recidivist offender". Borrell was for sentence on charges of robbery, burglary, unlawfully taking a car, and breach of parole. Counsel Rupert Glover said the offending had been unsophisticated and had occurred when Borrell was depressed. The probation report referred to a serious and long-term drug and alcohol problem.
Borrell went to a video shop at 9.45pm on May 7 wearing a balaclava and carrying a sawn- off . 303 rifle. He made the lone shop assistant open two tills, but the man could not open the safe. Borrell escaped with $700. The court was told that on May 26 Borrell took a car from a driveway in Spreydon and reversed it through the doors of a tavern in Addington. Liquor worth $230 was taken or smashed, and damage totalling up to $3200 was done to the premises and the car. Judge Doherty jailed Borrell for six years for the robbery, and added three more years for the burglary and unlawful taking. There was a conviction and discharge on the breach of parole.
