Background
Timaru Herald story December 21, 2006
A Twizel man who raped two teenage girls in two separate incidents has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
Luke Geoffrey Boyd, 25, appeared before Justice Fogarty in the High Court at Timaru yesterday for sentence on two charges each of sexual violation by rape, sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection and indecent assault. Boyd changed his plea to guilty on the second day of his trial in October.
He admitted raping the 13-year-old and 18-year-old complainants in separate incidents in Nelson and Twizel. The crown tried the cases together because of similarities between them. Justice Fogarty sentenced Boyd to six years for the rape of the younger victim and imposed a four-year cumulative sentence for the second rape. He received a four-year concurrent sentence on all other charges. The judge reduced the sentence from a possible 12 years to 10 years after taking into account mitigating factors including Boyd's guilty pleas and his desire to change his behaviour.
Boyd had volunteered to undertake a sexual offending programme and showed some understanding of the impact his actions had had on the lives of the victims. Justice Fogarty said Boyd seemed to be a young man trying to control a drug addiction and who was prepared to make some effort to get his life sorted.
