A paedophile has been sentenced to 11 years' jail instead of an indefinite sentence of preventive detention, after a hearing in the Court of Appeal. Court president Sir Ivor Richardson said the finite sentence would better balance the need for public protection with the need for punishment. Michael Kenneth Chambers, 34, had been convicted after a jury trial in the High Court at Auckland of sodomising a mildly intellectually handicapped 16-year-old boy.
