Background
The High Court in Christchurch heard the victim was on her way to service station to by some cigarettes when Cooke yelled obscenity from across the road. Unbeknown to the victim the offender crossed the road and ran up behind her. He then grabbed her around the neck, dragged her into a dark area, then raped her. The probation officer described in 2000 Cooke as a "directionless and undisciplined young man who appears to harbour a somewhat blasé towards life".
