A man who raped and bashed a severely autistic intellectually disabled woman was sentenced to 11 years in prison at the Palmerston North District Court yesterday. Philip Leonard Currie was drunk and high on methamphetamine when he raped the woman at a Palmerston North house in March last year. The woman, who can not speak, suffered cuts and bruises to her head, face, breasts, arms and legs when Currie bashed her later the same night. Currie was on bail for offences including assaulting a female when he raped the woman.

He has 104 previous convictions dating back to 1992, the court was told. In sentencing Currie, judge Les Atkins read parts of a harrowing victim impact report. "She was scared, shy, self abusing, and was weary of people looking at her. She wouldn't sleep at night and wouldn't sleep in her bed." The woman was in a "very distressed state for months" after the attack, the report said. Judge Atkins said alcohol and drug abuse was a key factor in Currie's offending, citing his regular use of cannabis, methamphetamine, prescription drugs and alcohol.

Judge Atkins said the "utter vulnerability" of the victim, the significant degree of violence and the number of previous convictions were all aggravating factors. Currie's genuine remorse and guilty pleas to the charges were mitigating factors, he said. Judge Atkins sentenced Currie to eight years in prison for raping the woman and an additional three years for assaulting her. He declined a Crown request for the imposition of a minimum non-parole period.
