Offender Databases

Please Read this before proceeding to Databases

• These databases are not complete. They are a work in progress, and probably always will be.
• For every offender listed here, we estimate that there another five serious violent offenders or sexual offenders currently in circulation in New Zealand that we have not yet managed to list as yet. To submit information on any new offender HERE
• We list two types of Offenders only;
  Violent Offenders , primarily serious, repeat offenders.
  and
  Paedophiles and Sexual Offenders.
  Some will be listed on both databases, as they have committed both types of offences. This is more common than you would think.
  We do not underestimate the impact of fraud, theft and other non-violent offences, but we must set some limits on what is already an overwhelming task!
  We have also added a Database Sentencing Tracker for those wishing to look at offenders by sentence length
• These databases are created and managed entirely by voluntary labour - no-one here is paid!! Funding would be nice.... mmmm, funding....
• We are very much dependent on information in the media - and rely on the public - that is, people like you - to fill in the gaps that we cannot. Submit additional information or corrections HERE
• We do our best to keep both databases updated and free of mistakes and errors... but...
• WE ARE ONLY HUMAN!

We endeavour to make this database as accurate as possible, but we are at the mercy of whatever information we can find in various online and offline archives, and whatever else we can find. If you do spot an error, please let us know - we want to get it right, but we WILL need your help to make it so! Naturally if serious criminal records were available online as in a number of overseas jurisdictions we would no longer need to worry....

And as we mentioned above, this is far from being a complete listing, particularly for offenders prior to 1998. Information for these offenders is not easy to come by, and any that people out there can advise us of we will appreciate hearing about! If we've missed someone it's because we haven't got to them yet!

Definition of "At large"
We do not use "at large" in it's strict legal sense, but more to denote that the offender concerned is out in the community and not either in prison or on home detention. This is because from the viewpoint of the public their primary concern is "is this person able to reside in and freely move about in my community?" rather than "is this person on parole or under supervision in my community?" Given the number of times offenders have reoffended whilst on parole, bail or "under supervision" (a meaningless phrase given the limited resources of the probation service) we prefer to look at this from the perspective of the public and of the offenders victims, rather from the perspective of the legal system. One of the purposes of the database is to enable the public (and often victims) to better manage risk to themselves and their families. For this purpose the legal distinctions between "at large" in its strictly legal sense and "at large" in the practical sense of the actual whereabout of the offender are largely meaningless.

The databases have been set up firstly as a service to the New Zealand public, and secondly in order to encourage the government to make criminal records of such offenders publically available and online as is done overseas in Australia, the USA, and to a lesser extent Britain. Our reasons for doing so are explained in greater depth here.
