A Hastings man has been jailed for seven years for attempting to kill a council worker walking to work. Nephi Edwards, 22, showed no emotion during his sentencing in the High Court at Napier yesterday on charges of attempted murder and assault relating to two random attacks. The court was told how Edwards had been depressed at not being able to pay his rent or bills and had hardly slept for four nights before committing the attacks. Edwards left home at 7.30am with a 21-centimetre steak knife and a plan to kill someone.

Justice Paul Heath said Edwards paced up and down outside a dairy on the corner of St Aubyn St and Riverslea Rd with the knife in his hand. At 7.50am, council worker Justin Walters walked past on the other side of the road to the dairy on his way to work. Edwards ran across the road, grabbed Mr Walters around the neck in a headlock, stabbed him three times then forced him to the ground, kicking him about the head and stabbing him again. The frenzied attack was halted only when a passing motorist stopped to help Mr Walters and Edwards ran off. At 8pm Edwards attacked again, this time a woman at her house, but was unsuccessful.
