Dion William Frew (29), invalid beneficiary, was convicted and sentenced to 15 months jail and declined leave to apply for home detention. He had admitted two Crimes Act charges from an incident in which he assaulted his partner and his stepmother, last December 12. The most serious assault was on his partner, who was grabbed by her hair, struck on the back of her head several times, and pushed on to a bed. His stepmother, who intervened to stop him, was struck across her head and upper arm.

Counsel Steve Turner submitted Frew had not previously assaulted either victim. He still had some sort of relationship with his partner. She had been visiting him while he was in custody on remand. Frew had been seeking psychiatric and psychological counselling. While his risk of re-offending was seen as high, his motivation to change was high as well. Judge MacLean noted the offending was soon after Frew’s release from prison. He also said it was understandable that through victim impact statements both women said they wanted nothing to do with the defendant. Special conditions of release from prison are to undergo a psychological assessment and any counselling, treatment, education or training programme considered appropriate.
