Background
From the Daily News 17th May 2000
An unemployed man attacked his pregnant partner with such force that she went intoshock, the New Plymouth District Court heard yesterday.
Robin Leigh Garry (43) was drinking with the woman on May 12 when, without warning,he started punching her face and upper body, and verbally abusing her, said police prosecutor Sergeant Brett Murray. Neighbours heard the victim screaming intermittently for half an hour and calledthe police who were forced to break into the house. The woman's teeth were chipped and she had heavy bruising and swelling to her face and upper body.
Garry, who admitted one charge of assault with intent to injure and one of breachinga protection order, offered no explanation for his actions, said Mr Murray. Judge Tony Fitzgerald convicted and remanded the defendant in custody until June 8 for a probation report, psychiatric assessment and emotional harm report.
