Background
The Auckland High Court heard how Greaves and three associates entered the home of a 62 year old man and his 28 year old son. The offenders attacked the victims with a steel wheel brace, a golf club and their fists. The violence was so barbaric that the golf club snapped in two. Justice Harrison said Greaves who was aged 16 years 7 months at the time of the crime was extremely fortunate not be facing a murder charge. The judge took a starting point as the maximum 14 year sentence but gave 55 percent discount due to Greaves's guilty plea, contrition, youth, co-operation and full acceptance of responsibility.
