Background
From the Manawatu Standard November 2006
One of Palmerston North's most prominent recidivists was back in the dock at the city's court yesterday after trying to run over a policeman with a car. Hendrix John Haerewa, 25, famous for a bold escape from the courthouse cells in June this year, yesterday had four months added to the prison sentence he is already serving for a smorgasbord of other offences. Haerewa had pleaded guilty to a number of charges relating to the unlawful taking of a car from Hastings and subsequent high-speed police pursuit on May 4 this year. Palmerston North police later spotted Haerewa and three others in the car parked at Domino's Pizza on Main Street.
Police partially blocked the car's escape and a uniformed officer stood in the vehicle's path, the court heard. When the car, driven by Haerewa, attempted to drive away, the officer told him to stop and placed his hands on its bonnet. Undeterred, Haerewa pressed on, "bumping" the officer out of the way and escaping. But his freedom was short lived and Haerewa pleaded guilty to charges, including unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, being unlawfully in a building, dangerous driving, and burglary. He defended the assault with a weapon charge, relating to the Domino's car park incident, but was convicted after a hearing in the Palmerston North District Court.
Haerewa reacquainted himself with freedom on June 20, after busting out of a holding cell at the courthouse and casually walking out the front door of the building. He was quickly recaptured and sentenced to four months in prison for escaping police custody. Before yesterday, Haerewa had served less than three months of his original sentence of two years and eight months. Citing a pre-sentence report, Judge Alistair Garland said Haerewa displayed no remorse for his actions, was a high risk of reoffending and had no motivation to address his "criminogenic needs". He also said Haerewa had numerous previous convictions, including for serious violence, and had $8758 in unpaid fines
