Background
Christchurch Press story 12/07/2006
Murray Douglas Harris has admitted six knife-point robberies but is disputing the police account of the crimes. He pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court today to charges of robbing three service stations, a tavern, a liquor store, and a factory shop. Police said the robberies netted Harris about $3000. The 45-year-old Christchurch man was arrested on June 23 while he was holding up a liquor outlet and had threatened the staff. A photograph of him wearing dark clothing, dark glasses and a hat had been published by the media in the days before his arrest. It showed his distinctive chubby face during a service station robbery.
He made an appearance on remand before Judge Graeme Noble today and defence counsel Ruth Buddicom filed his applications to plead guilty to the indictable charges. She said the offences were admitted but the police summary of facts was disputed and she was in talks with the officer in charge of the case. She said the disputed facts could be resolved without a hearing, and the agreed summary will be presented to the court when Harris is sentenced in two months. There was no application for bail and Judge Noble remanded Harris in custody for a crown sentencing session on September 22.
A presentence report and victim impact statements will be prepared for the sentencing. The six robberies all took place on Friday and Saturday nights. The businesses he robbed were the Lane Walker Rudkin Factory shop on May 13, the Shell Barrington service station on May 19, the Shell Moorhouse service station on June 3, the Halswell Tavern on June 9, the Challenge service station in Halswell on June 16, and the liquor outlet where he was arrested.
