Background
Hawkes Bay Today story December 6th 2008
A 28-year-old Fernhill man was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison yesterday for robbing and indecently assaulting a woman in her home in Flaxmere. Richard Allen Hawe appeared in Napier District Court yesterday on one charge of burglary and one charge of indecent assault. He had pleaded guilty to the charges on the first day of a trial earlier this year.
Judge Tony Adeane said that at 4.30am on June 8 this year, Hawe had gone to an address on Wilson Road in Flaxmere where he entered the garage. He then gained entry to the occupied house through an unlocked internal door. He then removed items from the house including food, money and the complainant's underwear.
He then walked into her bedroom while the complainant was sleeping and knelt down beside her. Hawe reached down her pyjamas pants and rubbed her buttocks whereupon she woke up and screamed for help.
He ran off before being picked up by police in Flaxmere Park a short time later. Judge Adeane said the woman had been deeply affected by the incident. He said it was calculated and "audacious" offending which needed to be met with a stern sentence.
