Background
Hawkes Bay Today story 31st July 2008
A cancer sufferer who says he sold methamphetamine to fund his own drug use and provide for his daughter has been sentenced to four years' jail for offences including an escape bid which could have killed a Napier policeman. Te Manga Morris Herewini, 27, appeared for sentencing at the High Court in Napier yesterday, having previously pleaded guilty to one charge of possessing methamphetamine for supply, one of selling methamphetamine, one of escaping police custody and one of aggravated assault.
The charges arose from incidents on the night of November 2 last year when police stopped a vehicle driven by Herewini and decided to search it for drugs. But Herewini, determined to ditch 16.1g of methamphetamine hidden in his underwear, became agitated when told he was under arrest and drove off. A detective was trapped for a short distance by one arm as he leaned through a window trying to remove the ignition key and another constable in the vehicle later described the wild ride as the most frightening experience of his 10-year career. Herewini, who has undergone surgery to remove tumours, was sentenced to two years and nine months on the methamphetamine charges and a further 15 months for the escape and assault.
