Background
From the Christchurch Press 20th December 1996
A 19-year-old man found guilty of attempting to rape an elderly Bryndwr woman at her pensioner flat earlier this year was yesterday jailed for four years when he appeared in the High Court in Christchurch. Leon John Rakohema Himiona, listed as a course trainee, was yesterday also sentenced on charges of wounding the 78-year-old woman and indecently assaulting her after the incident on February 16. Himiona was also sentenced on assault and burglary charges.
Police were called to the woman's home and found a young man lying on top of the woman apparently having sexual intercourse. At a preliminary hearing police evidence was that they found the woman rolling her head from side to side. She was covered in blood. Her eyes were swollen shut. The woman was admitted to Christchurch Hospital with head injuries and was unconscious for some time.
