Background
From the Waikato Times 23/12/2005
A Ngaruawahia man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after attacking his former lover in June. Leon Hopa, 41, appeared for sentence in Hamilton District Court before Judge Russell Callander. He had previously denied a charge of injuring with intent but was found guilty by a jury last month. Hopa's former lover, Deborah Sunde, was in bed about 8pm on June 26 and heard noises outside. She opened the window and Hopa tried to climb through. She fought him off but he got inside and punched her.
The jury was shown photos of Ms Sunde's injuries, including a burst capillary in her right eye, bruising on her left eye and a cut on her left eyebrow. She also had bruises on her left hand and arm. Her fingers required stitches after being jammed in the window latch. Ms Sunde told the jury her relationship with Hopa had been sexual and nothing more. The relationship lasted about four months then she found a new partner.
