Sentenced to nine years in July 1999
Background
The Press, Christchurch, July 31 1999
A Rotorua Black Power member continued to deny abducting and raping a 13-year- old girl as he was jailed for nine years. Thomas Hunuhunu, 28, unemployed, was found guilty by a Rotorua District Court jury on June 30 of abducting the girl with intent to have sexual intercourse with her and sexual violation by rape. Sentencing Hunuhunu, Judge Phillip Cooper said the girl's age and Hunuhunu's previous convictions were significant aggravating features.
Judge Cooper said Hunuhunu had continued to deny abducting and raping the girl. Hunuhunu was not remorseful but that should not be an aggravating feature, defence counsel Simon Lance said. The court had been told Hunuhunu and the girl were at a Black Power house in Rotorua on August 22 last year. Hunuhunu had dragged the girl next door and raped her.
