Background
From the Auckland Star and other sources
Irving (then aged 15) was tried in the Invercargill High Court for the murders of his mother and sister. The jury found him guilty of the murder of his mother and manslaughter of his sister Lauren (then aged 9) at his father's Waimatua farm where the family resided together. The Court heard the deaths occurred after
several insignificant events at the family home which involved Irving who was described as immature and emotionally volatile. After Irving's father and brother left the house to attend a garden party Irving shot his mother and sister Lauren with a 22 Winchester pump action rifle.
