A Former New Plymouth taxi driver and scoutmaster was yesterday sentenced to a total of eight years' jail for a raft of sexual offences. In the New Plymouth High Court yesterday Justice Morris told Peter Raymond Johns (54) that his behaviour was disgusting. Johns was sentenced on 11 charges dating from 1980 to last year and involving three victims. Justice Morris said that after a trial last month Johns was found guilty of one representative count of indecent assault of a girl under 12, three representative counts of raping a girl aged between six and 12 and one representative charge of unlawful sexual connection with a man.

Before the trial he had pleaded guilty to inducing a girl under 12 to do an indecent act, two indecency charges relating to a boy, and three indecency charges involving the same girl. Aggravating features of Johns' offending included the number of victims and the effect on them, the duration and repetitive nature of the offending and to a degree an absence of remorse. Justice Morris acknowledged Johns' good work record, his early pleas and the fact he had co-operated entirely with the police.
