Background
From a Waikato Times story 21/10/2000
Two Hokitika brothers have been jailed for assault and kidnapping. In Greymouth District Court yesterday, Judge David Holderness sentenced Daniel Alexander Kahui, 31, to six years' prison, and Martin Rawaho Kahui, 24, to five years after they admitted assaulting a man with intent to injure and kidnapping two others. The court was told the victim had the mental capacity of a 12-to 15-year-old. He was beaten at the request of a jailed drug dealer who indicated he would wipe a $6000 debt Daniel Kahui owed if the "nark" was beaten. When the Kahuis arrived at the victim's home, Daniel Kahui was carrying a wooden club.
After being punched once in the face, the victim ran back to his bedroom and pulled a sheet over his head. He was followed by Daniel Kahui, who bashed him until the weapon broke. Daniel Kahui told his brother to bring the other people in the flat to the bedroom. Two teenagers who had been sleeping in other rooms were herded into the victim's bedroom and made to sit on the floor and watch as both Kahuis continued to beat their friend. The victim suffered a fractured cheek, bruises and abrasions. He spent two days in hospital. Judge Holderness said the offence was a premeditated and vicious assault on a mentally impaired victim.
