Background
From the Waikato Times 04/06/1998
A Raglan man was jailed for 11 years today for raping and forcing a 17-year-old girl to perform oral sex on him after he had somodised her. Christopher John Karaitiana, 29, had earlier admitted one charge of rape, four of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, and one of aggravated burglary relating to an incident at the victim's home in March. In the Hamilton District Court today, Judge Robert Wolff refused to outline the details of the case, saying it was too upsetting for the victim and her family, who were in court. But he said the summary of facts should be made available to the media.
Karaitiana originally appeared for sentencing on May 14, but caused a furore when his lawyer applied to change his plea to not guilty. In court today, his new lawyer, Phil Connell, said Karaitiana had been swayed by advice from another inmate he met while on remand in Waikeria Prison. Karaitiana reverted to his guilty plea after talking to Mr Connell. The police summary of facts detailed how Karaitiana's victim woke about 1am on March 18 to find him in the bedroom of her Raglan home. After a struggle Karaitiana held a knife-like spatula with a sharp silver blade to the victim's throat.
He subjected her to several indecencies, raped her "with force", sodomised her and then forced her to perform oral sex on him. After rifling through her dressing table looking for money, he left the house. Judge Wolff said Karaitiana's actions were despicable, severe and premeditated. He had caused his victim considerable psychological harm which she would struggle with for some time. His change of plea to not guilty had undone any credit he may have incurred for his original early guilty plea. He sentenced Karaitiana to 11 years' jail for the rape and five years' jail for the unlawful sexual connection and aggravated burglary charges, to be served concurrently.
