From Waikato Times story 7th July 2006
A Manukau man will serve 18 months in prison after robbing a man and leaving him lying on a Thames street in March last year. He had earlier robbed another man and punched two others when they refused to give him cigarettes or money. Katapau Maliko Ili, 18, appeared before Judge Robert Wolff for sentencing in the Hamilton District Court yesterday. Defence lawyer Sean Ellis described Maliko Ili's actions as "random street violence committed by a young, drunk thug".
He said the judge had to balance sentencing between society's concern about this type of crime and the fact his client was "young and mpressionable". He begged the judge to keep Maliko Ili out of prison where he could be "led astray" by others and instead sentence him to community work. However, Judge Wolff said that would be "too merciful" and did not fit with other sentences for similar crimes. "You fall on the side of the line which allows me to sentence you to prison for 18 months," Judge Wolff said. Recognising Maliko Ili's family support, Judge Wolff gave him permission to apply for home detention.
