Background
NZ Herald story here and also here regarding his involvement in the manslaughter
His escape is described here with a good run down of all his offending.
From a Waikato Times story 10/03/2001
A judge told an unemployed Meremere man he had deprived children of the opportunity to learn after he was involved in stealing computer equipment from a small Waikato school. William Katipa, 35, who has a history of convictions for burglaries, was sentenced to 2 years 6 months in prison when he appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Thursday. Earlier this year, Katipa's co-offender Terry Hiku, also of Meremere, was sentenced to 2 years 6 months' jail.
