Konia was at the Manchester Tavern where Mr Ferguson and Mrs Waldin were drinking the night they were murdered. Mr Ferguson left the tavern earlier in the evening, followed soon after by Konia. Mrs Waldin left about 90 minutes later and walked the short distance to Mr Ferguson's Bowen Street flat, where she sometimes stayed. As she entered the front door, Konia grabbed her from behind and stabbed her several times in the chest. He then went into Mr Ferguson's room, where he was sleeping, subdued him in a struggle and stabbed him to death.
Konia then returned to where Mrs Waldin's body lay, stabbed her twice in the back and pulled down her underwear. She was not sexually abused. Money was taken from her purse and Mr Waldin's room before Konia fled through the back door. The case against Konia, who suffers from schizophrenia, was circumstantial. No DNA or forensic evidence linked him to the crime and no murder weapon was found. Konia was caught on security cameras running through a carpark toward Mr Ferguson's flat about the time Mrs Waldin was arriving.
