The grieving sister of a murder victim shouted ''I hope you rot'' when the killer was sentenced in the High Court in Hamilton . Lole (Sam) Lauese, 39, was jailed for life on Tuesday for murdering his 25-year-old wife Kara, mother of one child, and 10 weeks pregnant with their second child. Mrs Lauese was stabbed 79 times in her Hamilton home in April. Lauese, unemployed, pleaded guilty to murder and as he was sentenced one of his victim's nine sisters called out to him. Defence lawyer Philip Connell said Lauese hoped his wife's family would see his guilty plea as a sign of remorse and might ''at some stage'' forgive him.
Crown prosecutor Quentin Almao told the court the couple met in 1991 and, despite difficulties, married in May 1994. ''The relationship was marked by many occasions of violence. ''It's known that the deceased miscarried on at least three occasions partially or completely due to the assaults.''In September last year Mrs Lauese fled to Hamilton with her son Neville, then 2, and intended to ''start a new life''. But in October Mrs Lauese asked her husband to join her. After Mrs Lauese asked him to leave the Tawa Street home, he returned on April 10.
Mrs Lauese was found in the couple's bedroom. She had been stabbed in the face, neck, body and limbs, both lungs had collapsed and one of the stabs was so forceful it cut through a rib. She had been stabbed several times in the lower stomach. On April 13, Lauese confessed to police that he had murdered his wife. Mrs Lauese's mother, Gail Heathcote, said her daughter was loyal and devoted to Lauese. ''It didn't matter what he did to her, she would stay with him. As a Christian I know I need to forgive. I just want to know what happened and why.''
