Background
Dominion Post article 14 November 2006
Two Bay of Plenty men have appeared in court charged with the aggravated assault of a Taupo policeman following a high-speed pursuit, police say. William Louis Ratima, 39, of Te Puna, and Reno Leef, 31, of Tauranga, appeared in Taupo District Court yesterday and were remanded in custody till next week. The pair were arrested after a high- speed police pursuit from Kinloch, near Lake Taupo, to Lichfield, north of Putaruru, early on Sunday that ended with a car ploughing into a ditch.
Police had been called about 4.30am after two men were seen running from a Kinloch property. A car was stopped, but the lone policeman, Acting Sergeant Greg Weston, was forced to back away when the occupants allegedly became aggressive and threatened him. It is alleged the men then left in the car, and were pursued for an hour by police from Taupo, Tokoroa, Putaruru and Rotorua. The car then crashed. An outboard motor was recovered. More charges may follow.
