Background
The Auckland High Court heard how Lologa had been drinking at a neighbour's house. He began drinking in his garage that afternoon. He returned home and ate a meal. He left the house but came back again half an hour later. An intoxicated Lologa was let inside by his partner and argued with her. The victim had thought Lologa hurt his mother and said "If you hurt her again, I'll punch you." Lologa then got a machete and attacked the complainant. He was seriously wounded. Justice Douglas White set a starting point of 7 years but reduced it
by 12 percent due to Lologa's late guilty plea.
