A Bay of Plenty man shot his de facto wife dead because she did not want to come home with him, the High Court in Rotorua was told yesterday. Gregory James Malloy, 40, unemployed engineer of Maketu, near Te Puke, pleaded guilty to murdering 49-year-old Pet Kum Kee at Mount Maunganui on April 6 this year. Justice Laurenson sentenced Malloy to the mandatory term of life imprisonment. Malloy's counsel, Craig Horsley, said Malloy recognised the horror of what he had done. He killed the one person who was very close to him.

Malloy did not underestimate the impact the shooting had on the community. The Tauranga District Court had previously been told Malloy shot his way into the house Ms Kee was staying at and shot her through the lower left leg, almost amputating her foot. He dragged her towards his car while she pleaded for her life. He let go of her as he stopped to reload a shotgun. Malloy then bent down and fired a third and fatal shot that hit her in the right side of the chest, lacerating her heart, liver, and diaphragm.
