A man who attempted to rape a female prison officer while serving a seven year sentence for rape has been sentenced to preventive detention by the Court of Appeal. This is an indefinite sentence with a non-parole period of 14 years.
Jeremy William Mataira, aged 31, was sentenced to eight and a half years in the High Court at Christchurch last October but the Crown appealed saying the sentence was not long enough. Giving the Appeal courts decision, Mr Justice Casey said a psychologists report said there was a high risk a Mataira’s re-offending and he should be regarded as dangerous. Mataira was first convicted of assaulting a woman in 1978 followed by an indecent assault in 1983 and two rape convictions in 1985
