Background
NZ Herald story here and
here
Dion Matthews and another man abducted a 15 year old girl at knife point as the girl left the 1996 Auckland Easter Show. Repeatedly raped and degraded her, leaving her tied to a tree in Otahuhu. The psychiatric report noted Matthews was on parole at the time of the attack from another serious violent offence (armed robbery), noting his progressively worsening history of offending, absence of remorse, absence of awareness of how his behaviour affected others, did not suffer mental disorder, substance abuse disorder, antisocial personality disorder, a dangerous offender with no favourable prognostic circumstances.
The psychological opinion is that Matthews remains at very high risk of reoffending when eventually released. His behaviour in prison is described as good. In 1999 he was maximum security but his classification since reduced to low security. He is described as a talented artist and is drug free. We are advised there have been no incidents since 1997. We understand he has attended the Kia Marama programme for child sex offenders while in prison. Matthews has been in custody since April 1996
