Background
From Waikato Times story June 19th 1996
A Thames dairy farmer sentenced to eight years' jail on 21 counts of rape, indecent assault and inducement has been ordered to pay his three victims $120,000 reparation. George Robert McGaffin, 63, was sentenced yesterday in Hamilton District Court by Judge Robert Spear to eight years' prison for each rape charge and four years for each indecent assault and inducement charge, to be served
concurrently. One of the victims was awarded $60,000 and the other two received $30,000 each. McGaffin, who was found guilty in a trial and continues to deny the offences, committed the sexual assaults over a 16-year period from 1970. Two of his victims were aged 7 and 8 when he first violated them. His defence counsel, Kevin Ryan, said that sometimes people of McGaffin's age found it hard to admit such things. McGaffin was a first offender and had a record of hard work.
Judge Spear said the only thing in McGaffin's favour was that he was a first-time offender. He said he had to be cautious not to let his own revulsion of McGaffin get in the way of a suitable sentence. McGaffin's denial of the offences had had a continued and significant impact on at least one of his victims, who wanted above all else McGaffin's acknowledgement that the offending had occurred, he said. McGaffin's probation report outlined him as a person who presented himself as gentle and warm. "I think you are . . . quite capable of turning on the charm when you need to," Judge Spear said. "You are a person with a very cold heart."
