Background

From the Rotorua Daily Post 4th October 2007
A man was found guilty of a car jacking in which the owner was seriously injured after being thrown from the vehicle as it was driven off. A Christchurch District Court jury found Mark Andrew McGowan, a 24-year-old asphalt worker, guilty of assaulting Richard James Govan, robbing him of his car, and causing grievous bodily harm as he drove away. The jury rejected McGowan's defence counsel's theory that one of his mates might have put the keys of the stolen vehicle into his pocket after he fell into a drunken sleep on the bonnet of a car outside his house.
