Background
From the Daily Post (Rotorua) 23rd March 2010
A man and a youth have been found guilty of raping a woman in Rotorua a year ago. Makiha Mihaka, 20, pruner and a 16-year-old male youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were on trial in the Rotorua District Court last week, after pleading not guilty to one charge each of rape and sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection. The pair were accused of raping and sexually violating a woman at Rotorua on March 13 last year. The jury retired to consider its verdict on Friday afternoon after a five-day trial.
Jurors were sent home at 9.45pm on Friday and returned on Saturday morning to continue their deliberations. They reached their verdicts at 12.40pm. The youth was found guilty of both charges and Mihaka was found guilty of rape. However, the jury could not reach a verdict on the charge of unlawful sexual connection. Judge Chris McGuire remanded the Mihaka and the youth in custody for sentencing on May 7. The police officer in charge of the case, Detective Sergeant Garry Hawkins of the Rotorua police, told The Daily Post it was the first trial he had been involved with where the jury had deliberated on a Saturday. Mr Hawkins said he was pleased the jury continued its deliberations into Saturday and that the police had got the result they wanted.
