Background
Andrew Halligan was stabbed in the chest by Hemi Mohi just a few minutes before midnight on Tuesday the 28th of December 1993 and died shortly after, approximately 00.10 am Wednesday the 29th of December. Andrew died three days before he was due to get married.

A Christchurch woman was reeling from the horror last night of seeing the man she was due to marry on Saturday stabbed to death. Miss Pam rogers's planned dream wedding in Akaroa on New Year's Day was shattered when her fiance of just under two years was fatally wounded at a block of flats in Richmond late on Tuesday night.

Andrew William Halligan, aged 30, a process worker, died when he was stabbed at a block of four flats in Vogel Street after a minor dispute with another man. A 26 year old unemployed man, who was the subject of a police hunt, walked in the Christchurch Central Ploice Station at 10 am yesterday. He was interviewd by detectives and arrested. He will appear in the District court today, charged with murder.

Police said the accused had not known Mr Halligan before Tuesday night. He had been visiting friends at the block of flats, where he met Mr Halligan. Miss Rogers, aged 25, said she saw the scuffle involving Mr Halligan, and thought he had been punched, but not stabbed. She was devastated when she realised he had been stabbed. "It happened right in front of me. I just thought he had been punched by him. He (Mr Halligan) did absolutely nothing to deserve this," she said.

"I held him. I said some things to him.... What did I say? that's between us. Did he say anything? He grunted a bit." Miss Rogers was taken back into the flat while others tried unsuccessfully to keep Mr Halligan alive. "We were going to be married in Akaroa. We loved it over there. Now I don't really want to exist on New Year's Day."

Miss Rogers said she was too dazed and tired to talk last night about what had led to the stabbing. However Detective Inspector John doyle said the stabbing followe a minor dispute between people living at Mr Halligan's flat and the visitor. "It was a difference of opinion over how to loom after animals," he said. The argument then moved on to bicycles. It led to a scuffle and Mr Halligan was stabbed outside the flats.

"It was a very minor dispute, over a very minor matter that got out of hand. It did not need to escalate to this level." About eight people were at the flats when the stabbing occurred. A neighbour said Mr Halligan's death was tragic. "He was such a nice boy and had been living here for more than a year," she said. "The couple were good tenants who caused no bother.
