A man who tried to kill two police officers with a bomb-rigged car was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment when he appeared in the High Court at Hamilton yesterday.
George Robert Murray, aged 30, a timber grader of Waihi told he would have at least nine years of prison term before being released. Last month a jury found Murray guilty of attempting to murder two Waihi police constables. Karen Buchanan and Warrick Hands.
From the Dominion Post 29/05/2006
A man previously convicted of attempting to murder two police officers has been jailed again for having weapons in his car. George Robert Murray, 40, a welder, of Normandale, Lower Hutt, was convicted in 1996 on two charges of attempted murder of Waihi constables Karen Buchanan and Warrick Hands after a 111 call he made sent the officers to an abandoned car he had booby-trapped with an incendiary device. He was jailed for 12 years and had since been freed on parole.
In Wellington District Court on Friday, Murray was sentenced to 15 months' jail after pleading guilty to two charges of assault, two of possession of offensive weapons, and possession of a firearm and ammunition. Judge Bruce Davidson said Murray went to a Featherston hotel in August last year looking for two men he believed had assaulted his son. He punched two men. A few weeks later police stopped Murray's car in Upper Hutt. They found two knives, a knuckleduster, a pistol and ammunition. Since this offence Murray had been recalled to jail. His lawyer Simon Hewson asked that a sentence be imposed that would take into account the months he had served since being recalled.
