A 21 year old Auckland labourer was yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment after he admitted murdering a Pakanae man, Mr Walter Adrian Vandenbrink, in January. Warren Teriuha Nathan, of Papakura in a surprise change of plea at what was set down to be a three day trail in the High Court at Whangarei, admitted the shotgun killing of Mr Vandenbrink on January 21.

Nathan shot Mr Vandenbrink in front of his wife during a robbery at the couple’s farm near Opononi. When the trail opened before Mr Justice Hillyer, Nathan was asked to plead and he relpied "guilty". The decision appeared to take the court by surprise, including the defence counsel, Mr Arthur Fairly, who asked Nathan to repeat his plea. The sitting was then adjourned and 45 minutes later, when the court reconvened, Mr Justice Hillyer convicted Nathan and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
