Background
In the Auckland high Court, Justice Alan MacKenzie set a starting point of 11 years but reduced it because of Nelson's "difficult childhood" and guilty plea. He told Nelson it was a "savage attack" on the victim leaving her permanently impaired. The judge said Nelson was at high risk of reoffending and had low motivation to reform.
