A MURDERER is back behind bars in New Zealand, nine years after escaping from Auckland's Paremoremo Prison and stowing away to Australia. Keith Nepia, 40, faces at least 10 years in prison to complete a murder sentence imposed after he killed his partner, Mavis Whale, with a butcher's knife in 1987. In 1988, he escaped through a toilet window in Paremoremo's medium security section and eluded police searches across New Zealand.
Takapuna CIB head Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Bush said he escorted Nepia from Australia last Monday after serving an extradition warrant. Nepia has since appeared in North Shore District Court charged with escaping from prison. He was fresh from serving time in Perth for the 1993 attempted murder of his girlfriend, New Zealander Chairmaine Harris. The pair had been living together in Western Australia till Nepia accused Ms Harris of having an affair and stabbed her in the back.
