Background
NZ Herald story from 12th December 1992
Ngarimu, his brother and Haycock planned and robbed a Te Puke hotel. The offenders entered the premises with a loaded shotgun, forced the manager to open the safe before tying him up again. The offenders fled but were confronted by John Orchard, Ngarimu shot Mr Orchard's guard dog Sasha dead and shot Mr Orchard in the back of the head. Justice Williams described Ngarimu in sentencing as "vicious and violent". Ngarimu also fired shots at police during a high-speed chase.
