Background
From a Waikato Times story April 2006
A man who robbed a Matamata dairy using two concrete blocks as weapons while he was on parole has been sentenced to three years' jail. Townsend Nuku, 27, of Waharoa, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Hamilton District Court this week after previously admitting aggravated robbery and theft. The court heard Nuku and two associates went to the Oasis Dairy on Broadway, Matamata, about 6.50pm on December 7 last year. On the way into the store, Nuku picked up two concrete blocks. Staff were serving three female customers at the time. The court heard Nuku and the others - who have denied the charges - took three packets of cigarettes.
The store owner grabbed Nuku and tried to push him out of the shop while the other two allegedly attacked him. The trio then went to a liquor store and Nuku stole two four- packs of Jim Beam RTDs. Judge Maze said: "It is not enough to say you are at risk of institutionalisation, you are institutionalised." She said Nuku needed to think about the effects his actions had on the victims, who were new immigrants. The store owner's wife was pregnant at the time. Nuku had chalked up 46 convictions since 1993, including robberies in 2002 and 2003. His two associates will appear in court for a pre-trial callover.
