A Tauranga man has been sentenced to 10 years for raping and sodomising his father's former girlfriend. Judge Michael Hobbs told Calvin Leonard Penno that he had no respect for women and was unlikely to change. Penno has past five convictions for assault, three against women. In sentencing him in the Auckland District Court yesterday, Judge Hobbs said he struggled to find any mitigating factors in the case. Penno denied attacking the woman at Mt Maunganui on June 14 last year, therefore subjecting her to a trail. A jury found him guilty of one charge of rape and one of unlawful sexual connection. He had showed no remorse, apart from saying in a letter to the court that he was sorry for what the victim "had put herself through."

That comment is a general indication of the prisoner's attitude, Judge Hobbs said. The woman said in a victim impact statement that Penno was "like an animal." During the attack he struck her about the head and face and then cause a 4cm tear to her anus. The Court heard how Penno and the victim met at the Road House Bar at Mt Maunganui on June 14. They returned to her flat with one other person. Penno asked to use the toilet, which was an en suite with her bedroom. He asked her where the light switch was and a she went into the bathroom to assist him, was thrown face-first on the bed. Judge Hobbs sentenced Penno to 10 years imprisonment for rape and 10 years for unlawful sexual connection.
