Upper Hutt Mongrel Mob president Raniera Rawenata was sentenced in the High Court at Wellington yesterday to four years' jail on four charges of drug supply. About a dozen gang members and family, including children, sat quietly in the public gallery during the sentencing by Justice McGechan.Rawenata, 37, a bone carver, had previously pleaded guilty in Upper Hutt District Court to a charge of possessing a class A drug (lsd tablets) for supply, two charges of possessing class B drugs (amphetamines and cannabis oil) for supply, and one charge of possessing a class C drug (cannabis plant) for supply.

Defence counsel Paul Paino said Rawenata had freely helped police inquiries and that his gang affiliations were not relevant to the charges because he was supplying only a small circle of acquaintances. Justice McGechan accepted challenges to a police estimate that the drugs' street value was between $24,000 and $28,500 because Rawenata was selling to a restricted circle of acquaintances rather than for profit. But Ian Murray for the Crown said the operation was a "one-stop drug store" involving gang connections.
