Background
From the Waikato Times 4th December 2004
A Coromandel Peninsula man who abused children over a period of almost 30 years was jailed this week. Lawson Richards, 50, was sentenced in the High Court at Hamilton on Thursday on 18 charges ranging from indecent assault on young girls to rape. Justice Laurenson ordered Richards serve a minimum of five and a half years' jail. Richards admitted abusing five girls between 1971 and 1997.
The judge acknowledged that Richards was remorseful and had pleaded guilty. The judge said while he was impressed by the thoughtful and perceptive references Richards provided to the court from friends and associates, he had to balance that against the anguish and resentment Richards had caused his victims. He could not ignore that Richards abused three more victims after he had acknowledged and apologised for abusing the first two.
