Background
Fairfax Media story Friday the 20th July 2007
A man who told his rape victim he was punishing her was jailed for six years nine months today in Wellington District Court. Kris Colin Rigby, 33, pleaded guilty to raping the woman after they had arranged to meet. Rigby drew the woman to a secluded part of Wellington's town belt, grabbed her and raped her. During the attack he told her was punishing her and afterwards he threatened to kill her if she told anyone, the court was told this morning.
Rigby's lawyer Val Nesbit said he pleaded guilty to the rape to spare the woman the pain of testifying in a trial and was remorseful for his actions. Crown prosecutor Claire Boshier said Rigby's guilty plea should be acknowledged because of the obvious trauma giving evidence caused a victim, but the rape was premeditated, sadistic and violent. Judge Peter Butler said he accepted Rigby was remorseful and had pleaded guilty early. However, the rape was on a victim Rigby knew was vulnerable and was violent beyond the norm, he said. Rigby had 11 previous convictions, two of which in 1995 were for sexually assaulting a girl younger than 12 years old, which Judge Butler also took into account when sentencing Rigby.
