AN INVERCARGILL man accused of hitting a man in the face with a glass at a city nightclub last year left the man requiring 86 stitches, a jury was told in the Invercargill District Court yesterday.

Mason Daniel Rudolph faces a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Anthony Smith, and an alternative charge of wounding with intent to injure, after an incident at Tillerman's on February 4 last year.

In her opening address, Crown solicitor Mary-Jane Thomas said Rudolph hit Mr Smith in the face after Mr Smith told him the halloween-style mask he was wearing was ugly. Rudolph had smashed the glass on the counter and, using the jagged edges, had shoved it into Mr Smith's face, she said. The jury could be confident Rudolph had intended to cause injury to Mr Smith, she said. Mr Smith said the blow had been "fairly hard" and had knocked him backwards. "I just remember getting a smack," he said.

The blow had left him needing 86 stitches, he said. However, defence counsel David Slater said Rudolph had not realised he had been carrying the glass at the time, and the blow had been a "reactive" action. There was no intent to cause what had happened, he said. The trial, before Judge Kevin Phillips, is expected to finish today.
