Background
From the Christchurch Press 17/05/2000
A Tokoroa man has been found guilty of a murder which for years police believed was a motoring accident. Labourer Christopher Schuler, 47, was convicted in the High Court in Rotorua of the murder of Mile Vukotic. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Randerson. The Crown alleged Schuler murdered Mr Vukotic in November 1995, then crushed him under his car to try to make it look like an accident. He then collected a $350,000 life insurance payout. Police and the Coroner had believed Mr Vukotic was crushed by his car while he changed a tyre, but Schuler was arrested last April after a tip-off.
From the Waikato Times 23/09/1999
Christopher Schuler, 47, of Tokoroa, is charged with murdering 55- year-old Mille Vukotic, whose body was found under a car at a lay-by at Karapiro, near Cambridge , in November 1995. Police initially thought the death was an accident -- caused by Mr Vukotic's car falling on him as he changed a tyre -- but this year they reopened the investigation and in April charged Schuler with murder. The court has heard how Schuler invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in Mr Vukotic's peanut-selling business but was getting little return for his money. Schuler allegedly took out a life insurance policy on Mr Vukotic. Yesterday a friend of the accused, Hans Janetzke, told the court Schuler was "desperate" to get Mr Vukotic killed and collect the life insurance money.
